Price Horse Central – 3/14/10 – Comments and Suggestions

Pretty exciting day yesterday even if it wasn’t particularly profitable.  I’m sure Warren will have a revised Derby List up in a day or two.  Personally, my equine heroes are of the more mundane variety in the form of big price horses in MCL races but as Trevor Denman said in deep stretch in yesterday’s Zenyatta race, “if you don’t have goosebumps, you don’t love horse racing.”  Amen to that.

I’m not too crazy about today’s cards in Cali but maybe a suggestion or three.

Santa Anita:

Race 1:  Pass:  Jt Combos 1,3

Race 2:  Pass.  If playing race, prefer the 1A of the entry.  Sherriffs used to fire em up first time routinely but that was a long time ago before, in the words of Ann Moss, he became “the best trainer” and he is pretty darn good to be sure. JT Combos 1,1A, 2, 6

Race 3:  Pass.  General Dan (1) looks tough again.  I hate to say it because I’ve followed him for 40 years, but Van Berg cannot attract good stock any longer and it’s almost as if he’d have to have every runner in a race to win one.  Maybe today’s the day where he has 2 going in a 6 horse field.  JT combos 1, 5

Race 4:  See Daily Report for suggestion on Body Builder (3) to urn the tables on Hockley (4) at a nice price.  JT combos 2, 3, 4, 7

Race 5:  See Daily for Warren’s selection of Magic Launch (2) for Spawr and Talamo.  JT combos 2.

Race 6:  Game time decision.  In wide open race, I have a slight  interest in Living Our Dream (2) for Truman off the 60 day layoff.  Think this one will be one they have to catch.  Would like it more if Bejarno was up.  ALso, El Nadia (1) makes huge barn change from freezer Knapp to King Jer off the shocker.  This is a private purchase and he doesn’t make too many mistakes.   4, 5, 7, 11

Race 7:  Pass race in which ML fave Bettinonthefly (2) and Saarface (4) look best.  Jt combos 1,

Race 8:  We played Porto Marmay (2) last out when she paid 24 bucks and looks good today as well but at much shorter price.  Others, including Manhattan Beach (1)  are also more than capable.  JT combos 1, 4 ,9, 10, 11.

Race 9:  Going to go right back with Tsagalakis who enteres Cherokee Sun at 15/1 on the ML.  Can lightening strike twice on this JT combo author of 107 buck winner of 10 days ago?  Why not.  Kitchingman entries also do well in this type of race, so have to throw B.I. Guy (7) in this on show of speed last time.  JT combos 9, 11

I was born and raised in Chicago. I first went to old Sportsman's Park in Chicago in 1968 and have been hooked ever since. In the 90's I published Sherlock's Trainer Report which reported on trainer patterns on the California circuits. In the interim, my involvement with this game has been as a fan and wagerer. I study human intention and proficiency. At the track, this often takes the form of changes in a horse's condition or its rider. I look for price horses. I do this by examining factors that the public minimizes. Find a horse that you like that the public should not and you might have a value play. I also employ a methodology that focuses on horses that have a good chance of landing in the exacta. While many of these are chalk horses, an occasional price horse pops up. These exacta horses, which are listed here everyday, run first or second at least 40% of the time. In a game where 20% is a high batting average, the possibilities are endless.
